Second to London, Cornwall has more working artists than anywhere in the UK and a history of world famous artists that have been resident here. As a result, there are many fantastic galleries and inspirational gardens to explore. Whether you want an art holiday or just to visit galleries and gardens, there is something to inspire everyone. Here are our top things to do:
Built in 1894, the The Old Lifeboat House is perched on the edge of the harbour in Porthleven, with magnificent views. It now has exhibits and art courses throughout the year. Take a look at the listings as it is well worth a visit.
Now in its 13th Year the Cornwall Open Studios showcases 293 artists in residents that are open to the public. Spend the week of Sat 27th May – Sun 4th June visiting them.
Porthleven Jewellery Workshops hold regular jewellery making courses in Porthleven.
This well known art school offers a variety of short and longer courses.
Barbara Hepworth Museum – St Ives
Enjoy a walk around this beautifully garden curated by Barbara Hepworth herself. This unique space has gorgeous views over St Ives and provides an insight into one of the UK’s most important artists.
Located in beautiful gardens a slope overlooking St Michael’s Mount and the bay the gardens have one of the most astounding views in Cornwall. The gardens include International renowned artists works such as James Turrell’s underground elliptical domed chamber and David Nash RA have enthralled visitors. Well worth a visit!
Tate St Ives – St Ives
The beautiful building sits above Porthmeor Beach in St Ives. Well worth a visit and to the cafe upstairs which has glorious views. The gallery embraces international modern and contemporary exhibitions.
Falmouth Art Gallery – Falmouth
A child friendly art gallery that often has activities for families. The gallery has an outstanding collection of over 2,000 artworks that range from Pre-Raphaelite and British Impressionist paintings to contemporary prints, photography and a children’s illustration archive.
Penlee Gallery – Penzance
In a beautiful converted stately home, the gallery specialises in Newlyn School and St Ives artists. Penlee House is set in an attractive park with a licensed café and children’s play area.
Newlyn Art Gallery – Newlyn
For more than 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in South West Cornwall. In 2007 the gallery was redeveloped and we opened a second venue, The Exchange in Penzance. Regularly changing exhibitions reflect the importance of Newlyn in supporting art in Britain.
