Insiders guide: 4 secret spots to visit in Cornwall

In summer or winter these secret spots will impress you. With our local knowledge we’ve put together our top 4 for you to explore.

Wrestling Fields, Porthleven

If you follow the cliff path to the right of the Porthleven village, past the Ship Inn, you walk a cobbled path that comes to a gate displaying the sign ‘The Wrestling Fields’. According to local legend, the area was used for local Cornish wrestling competitions and later to bury shipwrecked mariners washed up on the shore.

The area has long seaside grass that is soft underfoot and offers glorious views of the cliffs and headlands. Take a blanket and relax in the sunshine – even in winter!

Tregonning Hill, Nr Godolphin

Take a brisk walk up to this rocky outcrop to enjoy the views – which are stunning! Below you, you will see the whole of Mounts Bay including Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole, with Falmouth Bay to the East, Godrevy Lighthouse and St Ives to the North. The Germoe War Memorial sits on the top and the granite surrounds is the perfect place to sit and soak up the view.

Godrevy Point – Seal spotting

The seals love this little cove away from everyone and very difficult for anyone but them to get to. Luckily for us we can still view them and the sweet pups from the cliffs above. Park at National Trust car park at Godrey Café and follow the road towards the lighthouse, enter the gate to the right and follow the path up the hill.

Prussia Cove

Just a few miles from Porthleven, the cove takes its name from notorious smuggler John Carter aka ‘King of Prussia.’ The little cove can be seen extensively in the film Summer in February with its big house overlooking. When you arrive you will see why it is the perfect location for a smuggling operation! In the summer it is a glorious place to swim as it is so sheltered. There is a free car park at the top of the hill and it is about a 10 minute walk.
