7 things to do on Boxing Day in Cornwall

When the excitement of Christmas Day is over and everyone is well rested and still full-up from the feast, there is wonderful Boxing Day to look forward to. Many families have their own Boxing Day traditions – long walks, family games or even a sea swim. It is a widely disputed fact that Boxing Day started some 800 years ago when the churches used to open the donation boxes and give the contents to the poor on that day. Be it true or not, Boxing Day is for many a relaxed family and friends day where memories are made.

Here is a pick of some our favourite things to experience on Boxing Day in Cornwall.

1. A winter walk : Praa Sands to Porthleven

Park your car in Praa Sands car park and take the South West Coast path to Porthleven. The walk will take about 1.5 hours and is medium difficulty with some larger hills but nothing too strenuous. Incredible views across the Atlantic, tin mines to explore at Rinsey will make it worthwhile. Reward yourself with a hot chocolate at Kota Kai on the Porthleven Harbour Head afterwards.

2. Take a walk on the beach to a seaside cafe

Head over to Gyllanvase Beach in Falmouth. The wide arc of golden sand and beautiful views across the sea are perfect for a seaside stroll and a little beach beachcombing. Then make your way to Gylly Beach Café for delicious food or a lovely seaside hot chocolate on the terrace. Children are welcome. There is a council car park not far from the beach.

3. Ice-skating at the Eden Project

Eden’s ice skating is a magical experience for the whole family. There are little ice penguins to help the little ones and different sessions for all abilities. Sessions continue until the 18th January 2018.

4. See the Mousehole Lights

Visit the beautiful fishing village of Mousehole where the famous lights are on each evening from 7pm – 11pm. The perfect way to extend that Christmas feeling. Pop into the local pubs and enjoy the atmosphere.

5. Walk up Godolphin Hill

Another of our favourite Boxing Day walks! Godolphin Hill is just the other side of Porthleven towards Godolphin estate and the views from the top are spectacular. On a clear day you can see from the Lizard to Lands End (almost!) and everything in between. Take something warm to drink while you rest on the monument. 6. Warm up in a cosy, dog friendly pub

The Ship Inn, in Porthleven is our favourite on Boxing Day. The fires will be roaring and the atmosphere is friendly.

7. Watch Christmas films

If the weather if bad, who wants to go out anyway! Snuggle up by the fire and watch a DVD. We’ve got plenty in DVD library in our office on the harbour head in Porthleven and we would love to see you!

Now, what’s on for New Year!?
